Washington, D.C. – One year after President Trump and congressional Republicans expanded access to Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), Congress should build on that progress and advance more reforms that lower costs, expand choice, and put patients in control.
The Working Families Tax Cuts Act made HSAs available to more people who buy lower-premium health plans. That matters because many Americans choose these plans to keep monthly costs down, but still need a better way to handle unexpected medical bills.
“President Trump and Republicans delivered a real win for patients,” said Joel White, President of the Council for Affordable Health Coverage. “By expanding HSA access, they gave more Americans a practical way to save tax-free, prepare for medical bills, and make health care decisions that work for them.”
For families, workers, and small business owners, an HSA can make health care a little easier to manage. It lets people set aside money before taxes to pay for everyday health care costs like prescriptions, doctor visits, and deductibles. That means fewer surprises, more flexibility, and more control over how patients spend their own health care dollars.
“Health care is expensive enough,” White said. “Patients should have every available tool to make care more affordable. Congress should keep building on reforms that put people before profits.”
