CAHC sent comments to Dr. Mehmet Oz in response to the request for information regarding the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT-4®) coding system.
In the comments, CAHC urges CMS to replace the AMA-controlled CPT coding system with ICD-10-PCS, arguing that CPT’s licensing structure raises costs, limits transparency, and can slow adoption of new medical technologies. CAHC says a single, federally maintained procedure coding system would reduce administrative burden, improve data consistency and remove what it views as conflicts of interest created by the AMA’s control over CPT. CAHC also argues that moving to ICD-10-PCS could make it easier for CMS to pursue site-neutral payment reforms by using the same coding framework across inpatient and outpatient settings.
